The first rays of sunlight stretched over Nouvel, casting long, golden fingers across the cityâs fractured streets. The air was still, but it was the kind of stillness that came before a storm, the kind that sat heavy on the chest, pressing down with quiet anticipation.
Jalen sat at the edge of the bed, his hands clasped together, his thoughts thick and layered like sediment settling in deep water. Lyric was still sleeping, his body curled slightly under the covers, the slow rise and fall of his chest a quiet reminder that for all the chaos outside their walls, there was still peace here.
He envied that peace.
His mind was already ahead of him, already in the streets, already hearing the voices of the people, the demands, the anger, the expectation. Today wasnât just another day of trying to hold Nouvel together. Today, he would fight to take back his voice.
A soft rustle came from the bed behind him.
âYou gonna sit there thinking all morning or you actually getting up?â Lyricâs voice was thick with sleep, but the smirk was already there, tucked into the edges of his words.
Jalen chuckled, shaking his head. âI donât know. I might just stay here and let someone else deal with the mess for once.â
Lyric stretched, then sat up, resting his chin on Jalenâs shoulder. His voice dropped, softer now, serious. âYou ready?â
Jalen let out a slow breath, rolling his shoulders. Ready? No. But prepared? Absolutely.
He turned his head slightly, catching Lyricâs gaze. âI have to be.â
Lyric studied him for a moment before nodding. He reached for Jalenâs hand, squeezing it once before standing. âThen letâs get to it.â
Jalen followed him to the bathroom, their morning routine playing out in comfortable silence. By the time they were dressed and stepping out onto the balcony, the city had already started moving, the tension pulsing through the air like electricity.
Across the skyline, dark smoke still curled from the remnants of last nightâs destruction. People gathered in clusters, already engaged in heated conversations, their voices rising, their frustration boiling over.
Today, Jalen wouldnât just be a voice in the distance.
Today, he would make sure Nouvel heard him.
And no oneânot the Council, not Thorne, not the Veilâwould silence him again.
As he and Lyric stepped out into the streets, the cityâs heartbeat thundered beneath their feet, pulsing in time with the inevitable.
The war for Nouvel had begun.
